Starbucks Plans High-End Roastery Shops

Look out for nitro cold brew and pizza

Starbucks has more than its share of things up its sleeve for 2017, from new drinks to completely new concept stores.

"We can't hide behind the fact that there is a seismic change that we're experiencing as a brick-and-mortar retailer," Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz explained yesterday during the company's Investor Day.

To keep up with the market, the company is planning to open 12,000 new stores around the globe over next five years, 5,000 of them in China, the AP reports. But not all of those will be the typical Starbucks stores that dot our corners. The company is working on two new coffee concepts including a high-end Roastery: These 20 or 30 shops will mimic third-wave coffee shops, selling pour-overs and nitro cold-brew drinks, and roasting on-site. They will also sell food, like pizza, that's made in-house.

Meanwhile, the company is planning 1,000 Reserve shops, which are like the Roastery shops, only without the roasting part. And one in five of its stores will also get a Reserve Bar, which will focus on small-batch blends, Business Insider reports. But not everything Starbucks is working on centers around coffee. The company is planning to open outposts of a standalone bakery called Princi, inspired by the Milan bakery, which the company invested in this summer.

Those eager to try out the new shops and sweets will have to wait though; the stores will start rolling out in the second half of next year. To pass the time until then, check out what happens when James Corden decides to make a movie in a Starbucks.
