Web-Based Grocery FreshDirect Plans Expansion

One of the original web grocers is planning to go national

FreshDirect has been in the grocery-delivery game for longer than just about any of the web-based supermarkets (or brick-and-mortar markets with delivery), dropping boxes of fresh produce, yogurt, snacks, pasta, meats and more at the doors of countless fans who would rather not waste time flipping through a tabloid in line at a supermarket.

Until now, it's been a strictly Northeast and Mid-Atlantic operation. But that will change soon. The company just received a $189 million investment, which according to TechCrunch, it will use to expand. The team won't discuss precisely where they are headed yet, but say they will open in large metropolitan areas across the U.S.

FoodKick, the company's young spin-off project that delivers a more curated selection of food to users within Brooklyn and Queens in an hour, will also be part of the expansion plan as it heads into Manhattan.
