Ingredients
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • ¾-inch-thick orange wheel plus ½ ounce fresh orange juice, divided
  • Canola oil, for grilling
  • 2 fresh mint sprigs
  • 1 ounce Lillet Blanc
  • ¼ ounce lemon juice
  • :::¼ ounce demerara syrup (2:1):::
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Ice
  • 2 ounces bourbon
Directions
  1. Sprinkle the sugar into an even layer on a small plate. Lay the orange wheel in the sugar and lightly press to evenly coat. Heat a charcoal or gas grill (or grill pan) over medium-low heat. Use tongs and a folded paper towel to lightly coat the grill grates with some oil, then place the orange slice on the grill sugared-side down. Grill until the orange is deeply caramelized, about 5 minutes. Transfer the orange slice to a cutting board and slice it into quarters.
  2. To a cocktail shaker add 2 orange quarters, the mint sprigs, Lillet Blanc, lemon juice, demerara syrup and Angostura bitters. Muddle for 30 seconds, then fill the cocktail shaker with ice. Add the bourbon, cover, and shake well. Double strain into a chilled coupe glass.
