Interestingly, the breweries that call Virginia Beach home aren't just dedicated to producing high-quality beer. They also take inspiration from the landmarks, people and culture in the region. Commonwealth Brewing Co.
In the Chic's Beach neighborhood, life revolves around the firehouse, which actually houses the Commonwealth Brewing Company. Once the home of Chesapeake Beach Fire and Rescue Station #4, this historic landmark was transformed into a temple for all things beer. There are 28 taps in the tasting room, which offer a rotating selection of Commonwealth's brews along with other craft standouts. The interior is a little rustic, with plenty of seating where you can unwind with the locals.
Back Bay Brewing Co.
Creative types have been creating a culture all their own in ViBe, an emerging arts district that's a few blocks from the beach. Back Bay Brewing nods to both the artsy atmosphere and the beach locale with its nautical-meets-industrial interior. The seasonal craft beers also pay tribute to the destination's history and folklore.
Young Veterans Brewing Co.
The name isn't a gimmick—Young Veterans Brewing Co. was founded by two Army veterans. Located just a few steps away from the Naval Air Station Oceana, the brewing company also pays tribute to veterans with craft brews like the New Recruit (a honey blonde ale) and Semper FIPA (an IPA with citrus hops).
Pleasure House Brewing
If you want to be welcomed like a local, head to Pleasure House Brewing. The town favorite has become a hub of community, right down to the Sunday Crock-Pot suppers. (Tickets to this event help benefit Virginia Beach charities.) Order a beer flight or take a chance on a Pleasure on Tap, then enjoy the laid-back atmosphere. Curious about the name? It comes from the 17th-century Pleasure House Tavern that once stood at this location.
Green Flash Brewing
Though Green Flash Brewing originated in San Diego, it chose Virginia Beach as a second location due to the similarities between the two coastal military cities, fittingly unifying the West and East Coasts. It's all thanks to a very impressive 58,000-square-foot facility that includes the 100,000-barrel brewery, a tasting room and a beer garden. Not bad for an out-of-towner.
