The Local Vine Cellar's Top Thanksgiving Wines - D.C.

The Local Vine Cellar picks top Thanksgiving wines

Turkey and pie may be the all-stars, but behind every Thanksgiving dish is a wine that can elevate it to greatness.

The team behind The Local Vine Cellar have made their new Penn Quarter wineshop as much a community gathering place as a retail space, so we turned to them for wines that will appeal to everyone at the table and stand up to tomorrow's many courses:

2008 Sandro de Bruno Durello ($23 for 750 ml): This lesser-known Italian wine smacks of minerality. Well balanced and quite aromatic, it goes well with light appetizers and roasted vegetables.

2011 Bovale Bobal 2011 ($17 for 750 ml): Spanish wine scion Isaac Fernandez uses only Bobal, a misshapen grape that resembles a bull's head, to make this dark ruby wine. Punchy with red fruit and a lingering finish, the wine is one to sip throughout the night, but particularly with turkey, cranberry sauce and gravy.

2009 Costa Olmo A Paola Chardonnay Arneis ($26 for 750 ml): Tropical flowers and fruit burst through this Northern Italian wine. Winemaker Vittorio Limone struggled for years to grow the elusive Arneis. His triumph, which he dedicated to his wife, Paola, is an ideal companion to pies and sweet potato casserole, though it's refreshing enough to dip into during cooking as well.
