Shopping At Sahadi's In Brooklyn - NYC

Heaps of new reasons to go shopping at Sahadi's

The unofficial rules of shopping at Sahadi's can feel brutal to the uninitiated.

Always take a number. Never shop on Sundays. God help you on Saturdays.

A new makeover and expansion hasn't changed those truisms. The store does trace its roots to 1895. But the total overhaul has made shopping at this venerable Middle Eastern grocer in Brooklyn a heck of a lot more enjoyable.

Lunch is now an easy promenade around the significantly roomier store away.

Pick up cheese and za'atar pies ($2.35 and $1.35) at the new bakery and twangy sheep's-milk feta ($6.95 per pound) at the larger and brighter cheese section. Hummus, baba ghanoush ($4.95 per pound) and taramasalata (fish roe spread; $5 per pound) are the deli counter's happy trio. A new coffee bar means you can caffeinate while you wait to have your olives hand-packed.

Then stock up on uncommon ingredients like charcoal-black cocoa powder ($6.80 per pound), pistachio nut paste ($9.50 for 11 ounces) and rosewater ($6.60 for 9 ounces) for cooking adventures to come.

Our personal house rule also has not changed: When you are done, pop in next door at Damascus Bread & Pastry Shop for pita.
