Friends & Farms rounds up the best local food

Friends & Farms is like the Pied Piper of area farms.

The two-week-old CSA-style service rounds up the very best foods from area farmers, bakers, ranchers and fishermen, then creates a weekly food basket of ultra-fresh flavors.

Each week, the founders survey the selection, curating the best available products from purveyors including Mock's Greenhouse, Prigel Family Creamery, Green Glades Creamery and Jim Bange, an expert at growing sweet corn.

This week, the projected basket–which can feed two ($221 per month) or four ($329 per month) people at prices that beat commercial stores–will include rib eye steaks, milk, eggs, peas, zucchini, raspberries, bread and steak seasoning, among other meat and produce.

In addition to the baskets, the company assembles themed packages, including a Low Country boil ($60), which combines corn, potatoes, sausage, shrimp, a loaf of bread and spice mix. In time for the holiday, the company has an eight-person grill package ($62), filled with hamburger patties, all-beef hot dogs, buns, grilling vegetables and Kelchner's Hot Horseradish Mustard.

For now, pickup is limited to Columbia and other northern neighborhoods, but Silver Spring, Bethesda and Rockville are coming soon.
