29 Vines Wine Bar | Purcellville, VA

29 Vines opens its garage door

Virginia winemaker Matt Barbagallo calls himself a garagiste.

And he is precisely that–a backyard blender.

Barbagallo grows 29 Viognier, Cabernet Sauvignon and Concord plants in his own backyard, though he leases vines from Tarara Winery and Fabbioli Cellars to supply the bulk of his grapes. The results include three whites and a red, which Barbagallo pours at his new and aptly named tasting room, 29 Vines.

The limited-edition Reserve Chardonnay ($22 per bottle) is aged in French oak for 18 months for a body that begins dry and races to a fruity finish. It's particularly good with the caramelized sweetness of roasted squash. The Sweet Rebecca Lynn ($18 per bottle) is a citrus-streaked tropical blend of Seyval Blanc and Traminette. A light, herbaceous Chambourcin ($20 per bottle) debuted in the past few weeks.

The flagship offering is Karma ($28), a half-Merlot and half-Cabernet Franc blend that is light on tannins and seems to bloom in the bottle.

29 Vines pours each wine–including selections from Tarara and Fabbioli–by the glass ($8). Alternately, guests can choose a flight of only the house pours ($10 for five pours) or tastes of special selections ($10 for approximately six pours).

Make it a pairing meal: Guests are encouraged to bring food. We recommend that it comes from the nearby Magnolias at the Mill.
