Greenport Harbor Brewing Co. Beers From Long Island

Craft beer flows in from the 'burbs

Most of us think of Brooklyn when it comes to local beer. And why wouldn't we: Brooklyn Brewery and Sixpoint Craft Ales have kept us awash in quality suds for years.

But there's beer coming in from the Long Island that's on par with what's brewed in the boroughs.

Greenport Harbor Brewing Co. recently started trucking kegs of its North Fork-made beer into the city. But rinse out your growlers–it's only available on draft.

While the brewery's small-batch production methods preclude producing a huge volume of beer, it does turn out an impressive number of styles–and now you don't have to travel to Greenport's tasting room to try them. Start with the hoppy Disorient IPA, the chocolatey Black Duck Porter or the Scotch Ale which has hints of molasses, roasted barley and caramelized brown sugar.

Buy them by the growler at the Tribeca Whole Foods and Bierkraft, or drink them by the pint at Against the Grain, Spuyten Duyvil, Roberta's and other spots in Manhattan and Brooklyn.
