RBC gives NYC a java jolt
As coffee-geek culture continues to percolate in New York, we're increasingly interested whether it's Stumptown or Counter Culture beans begetting our brews. But RBC NYC, the city's newest coffee shop, is above playing favorites.
This newly opened Tribeca café rotates selections from a wide range of roasteries--from the local (century-old Dallis Brothers in Queens) to the far-flung (San Antonio's Brown Coffee Company and Vancouver's 49th Parallel), offering coffee lovers a wealth of exposure to new sources of promising beans.
"There are lots of exciting things happening in coffee right now and we're open to them all," said RBC's coffee director, Cora Lambert (pictured).
When it comes to machines, however, RBC is loyal to one: the Slayer. The first of its kind on the East Coast, this American-made, stainless steel beauty can tackle both drip and espresso, and stands out with its "pre-infusion" setting, which saturates the beans at a lower pressure for an especially intense cup.
While you wait for yours to brew, pull up a seat at the sturdy wood table, snack on a Bouchon Bakery pastry and try to guess what RBC stands for.
Don't look to Lambert for hints--"It's a secret," she says--but each month the staff picks its favorite guess; leave yours behind for a chance at being awarded free coffee.
