Zapiekanka Is Poland’s Historic Open-Faced Sandwich
BY ANNIE JOHNSTON
Created in the 1970s, zapiekanka is one of Poland's most renowned street foods. It's an open-faced sandwich featuring a baguette topped with various vegetables, meats, and cheeses.
It was originally made with sautéed mushrooms, semi-hard cheese, and a drizzle of ketchup, but the sandwich has evolved to include a wide array of toppings and condiments.
Zapiekanka was once regarded as a low-quality dish, which eventually fell through the cracks of popularity, but today it brings many a strong sense of nostalgia.
Today, it is made with high-quality ingredients and vast flavor combinations. The baked bread has a thick layer of cheese and toppings like feta, pineapple, and cranberry jam.
