Cajun redfish was once so popular that led to a huge ban amid devastation to redfish numbers. Luckily, as of 2023, redfish populations have been recovering.
Fugu
Fugu is a type of blowfish that can be deadly if incorrectly prepared. You'll have a hard time finding it in the U.S. due to strict import and preparation requirements.
Goliath Grouper
These gigantic fish have been rapidly declining in number, leading to massive fishing restrictions. You can get it in the Caribbean, but it also has lots of mercury.
Goldfish
As recently as 2014, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals had to state that it is illegal to eat live goldfish. People have been prosecuted for it.
Shark
Eating shark meat is actually legal, but finning — catching sharks, removing their fins, and then re-releasing them — is illegal. Some places do it to make shark fin soup.
