Why You Shouldn't Store Cheese In Plastic Wrap
By JENNIFER WALDERA
Cheese is a very popular commodity in the United States, so much so that the US is the second-largest producer of cheese worldwide. With all the nutrients it packs, it’s easy to see why, but what else could it be bringing to the table if it’s stored improperly?
Wrapping cheese in plastic can cause moisture to be sealed in, leading to mold or even the plastic creating flavors that the cheese will absorb. Funky cheese is good when it's sporting the funk that the cheese came with, but creating new funk is a no-no.
According to professionals, it’s best to use wax, parchment, or — better yet — cheese-specific paper, combined with loosely wrapped foil around it. This allows the cheese to breathe and release any excess moisture without letting it dry out.
