Why You Should Toast Both Sides Of Your Bread For Grilled Cheese
By MICHELLE WELSCH
The grilled cheese sandwich has become a staple in America, and it is the fourth most popular American dish, according to YouGov. This easy-to-make sandwich has quite a few variations, and there is one tip that would make it more delicious.
In 2010, NYC-based chef Gabriella Hamilton introduced coating the sandwich bread with mayonnaise before toasting, since mayo delivers an impeccably crispy crust, not a blackened or burnt edge. This technique is excellent, but there is more to it than that.
Coating both sides of the bread with mayo will result in a much crisper, flavorful sandwich. In addition, King Arthur Baking recommends using a clear lid to make sure the grilled cheese remains delicately browned and not burned.
