Why You Should Think Twice Before Buying Baby Carrots
BY PEGGY AOKI
While "baby" carrots are conveniently peeled and ready to eat, they come with a few disadvantages that you should consider before dropping them in your shopping cart.
Baby carrots are cut to size from bigger carrots and further shaped by a machine that shaves large carrots into shapes. These shaved carrots can dry out without the peel.
The large carrots that are converted to baby cuts are less flavorful, so you're cheating yourself out of a more delicious vegetable experience in both texture and taste.
To overcome this drawback, bags of baby carrots contain water to prevent a white frost appearance. However, the water can cause a slimy texture.
