Why You Should Stir French Press Coffee
By ERICA MARTINEZ
The French press method is an easy, affordable, and reliable method to make a great cup of coffee. All you need to do is place your coffee grounds in the brewing pot, pour boiling water over the grounds, let it sit, and press, but even the savviest of French press fans often skip a step that can make their morning cup much better.
After pouring the boiling water over the coffee grounds in your French press, let the mixture sit for a few minutes, then stir the grounds so that the dry lumps of coffee can break apart and add to the flavor of the final result. After stirring, let the grounds sit for another few minutes and then gently press the plunger down to extract the coffee.
Even the smallest clump of dry coffee can make a difference in the final flavor profile, and stirring makes sure all of your coffee grounds are saturated and can give up all of their flavor notes. This simple yet crucial step of stirring can really make your French-pressed coffee taste richer and fuller than what you're used to.
