Why You Should Never Open Your Slow Cooker Lid When Cooking
By ERIN SHAW
A slow cooker is a great time-saving solution for a delicious dinner because it works by slowly building up heat and capturing moisture inside the pot. However, avoid opening the lid of your slow cooker because doing so could spoil the entire meal, and here’s why.
Lifting the lid of the slow cooker while it is cooking can cause it to lose 10 to 20 degrees of heat. Don't touch the lid unless the recipe specifically instructs you to, and if you must lift it, increase the cooking time by about five minutes.
Another factor to consider is a safety issue. When the lid of a slow cooker is opened during the cooking process, it releases a ton of steam and hot moisture, and there's the potential to burn the hands and arms.
