Why You Should Always Salt The Water When Making Mashed Potatoes
By KAREN HART
Making mashed potatoes is not rocket science: boil your potatoes, mash them, and add fats. But not all these steps are as intuitive as they seem, as expert tips on cooking creamy mashed potatoes include the use of Yukon potatoes, and avoiding the ricer and food processor to cook it.
But the most essential suggestion, per Bon Appétit, is always to salt the water you are boiling your mashed potatoes in. It acts as pre-seasoning, and Bon Appétit recommends adding a full cup of kosher salt to the boiling water.
Don’t worry if that sounds like a lot, as the potatoes won’t be able to absorb all of the salt during the cooking time. Remember, adding salt to your boiling water is an absolute must if you want to avoid tasteless mashed potatoes.
