Why You Need To Stop Buying Pre-Packaged Mushrooms
By BAILEY BROCKETT
Storing fruit and vegetables so they stay as fresh is not as simple as it sounds, and can be confusing, frustrating, and time-consuming. Mushrooms are technically not a fruit or a veggie, but they perish just as easily and need to be handled with care, and keeping your mushrooms fresh begins at the buying step.
While pre-packaged mushrooms are convenient, they may not be the best option. Mushrooms need to be examined to make sure they're firm and fresh, with no sliminess or musty smells; with packaged mushrooms, you can't even see or feel all the mushrooms in the box, but you can do that when choosing from bulk bins.
Also, pre-packaged mushrooms are often packed in plastic. Mushrooms are composed of 90% water and have no protective skin, and storing them in plastic traps moisture inside, eventually turning them slimy; even if you make the right choice and buy whole mushrooms in bulk, never store them in a plastic bag.
