Why You Might Not See Bananas On Store Shelves Anymore

The International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) is the union of dockworkers on the East Coast. For 45,000 ILA members, a six-year contract is set to expire on October 1, 2024.
With no negotiations for a new contract, the threat of a strike is potentially devastating economically. Foods like bananas will be hit especially hard since they are perishable.
Most of the world's bananas are grown in India and roughly two-thirds arrive in the U.S. through East Coast ports. If the strike lasts long enough, supply could begin to shrink.
