Why Trader Joe's Packages Whole Bean Coffee In Cans
BY  LISA CURRAN MATTE
Trader Joe’s way of packaging their store brand items is often more clever and practical than some other brands' practices. This includes packaging coffee beans in metal cans.
Coffee beans are usually sold in bags with one-way valves to release carbon dioxide without letting flavor-destroying oxygen in. However, cans keep oxygen out more effectively.
Trader Joe's packages its beans fresh out of the roaster and into the cans, significantly cutting down on exposure to oxygen, which can negatively impact their flavor.
Trader Joe’s also offers bags and pods of coffee, but cans provide the freshest beans. You'll just have to make sure to transfer them to a very airtight container once opened.
