Why The Ward Eight Is Boston's Signature Cocktail
BY LISA CURRAN MATTE
Throughout the United States there are plenty of regional specialties, and for 100 years, Boston has been home to the signature cocktail the Ward Eight.
Made of whiskey, lemon juice, orange juice, grenadine, and soda water with a maraschino cherry and orange slice garnish, the cocktail was created in the 1890s.
The cocktail was created at Locke-Ober restaurant to celebrate politician Martin Lomasney’s election to the House of Representatives for the Eight Ward.
Although the drink was popular after its creation, it fell into obscurity in the 20th century. You still might find it at Boston’s Ward 8 bar, where it has been spotted on the menu.
