Why The Rum Runner Is The Signature Drink Of Key West, Florida
BY WENDY LEIGH
Inspired by the 1920s rum runners during Prohibition, the Rum Runner cocktail of Key West, Florida was supposedly created in the 1950s on the island of Islamorada.
Reportedly created by "Tiki John" Ebert at the Holiday Isle Tiki Bar, the cocktail originally consisted of Myer’s rum, brandy, grenadine, and banana liqueur.
The original Rum Runner eventually became a signature cocktail of the Florida Keys. Key West cradles the infamy, intrigue, and history of the Rum Runner story.
Today, the cocktail is more modern with Bacardi Superior and Bacardi Black rum, banana liqueur, and grenadine with orange, pineapple, and lime.
