Why The Material Of Your Wine Glass Really Does Matter
BY ANNIE JOHNSTON
When drinking wine, it’s important to use a crystal or glass cup. Other materials, such as plastic, styrofoam, metal, and stainless steel can alter the taste and aroma of the wine.
Since plastic and styrofoam cups are porous, the liquid will absorb chemicals from them. The thickness and shape of metal and stainless steel can mess with the aroma and flavor.
As to whether to use glass or crystal, it’s up to preference. Glass is essentially odorless and tasteless, can be washed in the dishwasher, and is very affordable.
The downside is that glasses often have rimmed lips, which is not ideal for wine. In contrast, crystal cups provide a rim with ideal thinness while remaining strong and durable.
Most crystal cups can’t go in the dishwasher, but some that are made without lead can. Overall, crystal is a superior option, but it may not be the most budget-friendly choice.
