Why Rosalynn Carter Was Boldly Opposed To A White House Alcohol Ban
BY PEGGY AOKI
Although Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter were Southern Baptists and opposed to drinking alcohol, the First Lady was against banning spirits from the White House.
As Georgia's governor, Carter only served wine, not spirits, at official functions. Once in the White House, many wondered if they would continue this practice.
A ban on spirits, combined with their small-town informality, policies favoring conservation, and the role faith played in their lives, could have been a political red flag.
Both Rosalynn and Jimmy Carter were acknowledged for their occasional enjoyment of a glass of wine, especially during international travels and when hosting dignitaries.
