Why Peanut Butter-Stuffed Onions Were A Staple During The Great Depression

Peanut butter-stuffed onions became a staple food during the Great Depression. A hole in the onion's center was stuffed with peanut butter, cooked, and topped with bread crumbs.
As the onions roast in the oven for an hour, the peanut butter apparently expands while the onion lightly caramelizes, creating a somewhat dubious taste sensation.
When food was scarce during the Great Depression, the official Bureau of Home Economics stepped in by presenting affordable meal ideas, including peanut butter-stuffed onions.
