Why NYC's Famous Food Critic Wasn't Wowed By Peter Luger Steak House
BY Luna Christina Lupus
The famous Brooklyn steakhouse Peter Luger has been operating since 1887 and is somewhat of a landmark in New York City. However, not everyone is a fan of the restaurant.
In 2019, The New York Times published a review of Peter Luger, written by influential NYC food critic Pete Wells. The review awarded the steakhouse with zero stars.
Wells highlighted the restaurant's poor service, subpar food, and lack of consistency. The critic had actually been frequenting the iconic steakhouse since the 1990s.
However, he had become disillusioned with the place over the years. In his review, he wrote, "I don't remember when the doubts began, but they grew over time."
In addition to eye-watering prices, Wells described the food as wildly unappetizing and noted the beef was inconsistent, varying in doneness between customers with the same order.
In October 2022, Peter Luger officially lost its Michelin star. However, the reason is solely related to food quality and consistency.
