Why It Always Pays To Buy Whole Canned Tomatoes
BY Javaria Akbar
Since canned tomatoes are versatile, convenient, and have a lengthy shelf life, stocking them up is a great idea. However, you're better off buying only the whole tomato version.
Buying whole canned tomatoes means you can chop, crush, or puree them to fit with your recipe of choice, which gives you heaps more flexibility and control.
The salt used to help preserve the tomatoes also magnifies their flavor. They're also easily mashable and come already peeled, making them super convenient for you.
Preservatives, such as calcium chloride, are often added to chopped tomatoes during processing so they retain their bite and structure, which isn't the case in whole tomatoes.
Plus, unlike cans of whole tomatoes, chopped or crushed ones can be made from a mix of many harvested tomatoes, which means each chunk could have a different level of sweetness.
