Why Don't Honeycrisp Apples Taste The Same Way Anymore?
BY Luna Christina Lupus
Honeycrisp is one of the most popular types of apple thanks to its thin skin, satisfying crispiness, sweet juice, and gentle acidity. However, they don't taste quite the same now.
One significant reason is that this apple variety wasn't made to be grown on a large scale. The Honeycrisp came about quite serendipitously at the University of Minnesota.
The tree, an experimental cross between two other varieties, failed to pass the test of withstanding colder conditions and was supposed to be disposed of.
However, one scientist decided to take a chance on the delicate tree and further develop the variety. The Honeycrisp apple became a massive success, and demand for it grew.
The variety is terrible for mass production — the tree requires lots of time and labor to maintain, and the apple's thin skin makes it more susceptible to sunburn and diseases.
