Who Is The Actual Company Behind Avocados From Mexico?
BY BRIAN UDALL
Avocados From Mexico, the number-one-selling brand in the U.S., is a nonprofit marketing organization that's a subsidiary of the Mexican Hass Avocado Importers Association (MHAIA).
Avocados From Mexico actually has two parent companies. It's a joint venture between MHAIA and The Association of Avocado Exporting Producers and Packers of Mexico (APEAM).
APEAM is a nonprofit civil association representing Mexican avocado farmers and packing houses, while MHAIA is a 501(c)6 representing importers and distributors in the U.S.
The companies direct the Avocados From Mexico brand, with MHAIA researching, developing, and marketing, while APEAM regulates production from food safety to sustainability.
Avocados From Mexico was originally solely an APEAM brand until MHAI joined. APEAM is still the only Mexican association cleared by the USDA to export avocados to the U.S.
