What Makes Egg Rolls Distinct From Spring Rolls?
BY LUNA REGINA
Despite egg rolls and spring rolls having a similar appearance and composition, they’re quite different from each other in terms of texture, ingredients, and cooking methods.
Egg roll wrappers are made from wheat flour, water, and eggs. When fried, the shells gain a coarsely fried and bubbled exterior, making for a very crunchy bite.
In contrast, a spring roll may have a much thinner, crackly fried shell, or it could be wrapped in transparent rice paper. The fillings of these two kinds of rolls differ as well.
Egg rolls typically contain shredded cabbage, carrots, mushrooms, and seasoned meat, while spring rolls use vegetables as the main ingredient and may feature seafood.
Another difference is their preparation. Spring rolls can be steamed, fried, baked, or even served cold, while egg rolls are deep fried, baked, or air-fried.
