What Is Tupelo Honey And Why Does It Cost So Much?
By Autumn Swiers
From buckwheat to manuka, artisanal honey is having a moment right now. One such variety that’s well worth its prestigious reputation and high price tag is tupelo honey.
Tupelo honey has a velvety texture and delicate, sweet flavor. Outside of the South, it can only be bought online from brands like Honey Feast, which charges $12.99 per 12 ounces.
The honey's price is due to its availability and labor-intensive nature. It can only be sourced from Ogeechee tupelo gum trees in Florida and blooms for only three weeks.
Tupelo honey totes distinctive tasting notes of light cinnamon, fresh flowers, buttery richness, and subtle tones of rosewater and cotton candy. It also has a very long shelf life.
