What Is The Best Way To Cook Frozen Pierogi?
By ANNA STAROPOLI
Pierogi are a classic Polish dish that first came to the United States at the start of the Great Depression, and by the 1960's, the potato-filled dumplings had become a comfort food staple in the frozen food aisles of grocery stores. Here's how to get the most out of your favorite frozen pierogi.
The traditional (and some say best) way to cook fresh or frozen pierogi is to boil them in a pot of salted water; once the dumplings float to the surface, give them a few more minutes and they'll be ready. However, for a more robust flavor, you can deviate from tradition and sautée, bake, fry, or grill them.
You can even use a hybrid method and boil your pierogi before frying them, cutting down on active time in the kitchen. Regardless of how they're cooked, pierogi are best enjoyed with a dollop of sour cream on the side; much like boiling, this serving suggestion is traditional for a reason.
