What Happened To The Free Boiled Eggs American Bars Once Served?
BY GENE GERRARD
There was once a time in America when bars always had boiled eggs at hand. However, they have now virtually disappeared, possibly due to food poisoning concerns.
In 1987, the FDA designated raw eggs a "potentially hazardous food," and restaurants were offered harsh guidelines for only using properly cooked pasteurized eggs.
With a few exceptions, the boiled egg is replaced in bars with deviled eggs or Scotch eggs, which, of course, aren't offered free of charge as they once were.
