What Does A Traditional Norwegian Breakfast Look Like?
BY Josie Dlugosz
Since Norwegians tend to eat lunch earlier lunch, around 11 a.m., their breakfasts are usually small and light. They consist of a few staple dishes and ingredients.
Bread is an important part of breakfast in Norway. Whole grain breads, specifically, are very common because they're packed with healthy grains and seeds.
Those like the knekkebrød, which resembles a cracker, and the kneippbrød, which is more loaf-like, are often enjoyed as is or with cheese, jam, cold cuts, or butter.
One of the most iconic Norwegian foods is brown cheese. It's caramelly, fudgy, and quite complex; it's often eaten for breakfast or as a snack with bread, jam, or on its own.
A Norwegian breakfast dish packed with protein is laks og eggerøre, an open-faced sandwich with scrambled eggs and smoked salmon.
Norwegians also love their coffee, and many drink multiple cups a day. It's typically enjoyed black at home, though you can find specialty coffee drinks in coffee shops.
