Watch Out For This Red Flag When Buying Vintage Cast-Iron Cookware
BY Amanda Berrill
Although cast iron pans are meant to last a lifetime, there are a few tell-tale signs that you should look for when purchasing vintage cookware, specifically any cracks or warping.
Cracked cast iron is unsalvageable, as cracks let moisture, fat, and food particles through, causing further damage. Watch for deep pockmarks or small, crater-like holes, too.
Pitting in the surface of cast iron pans is mostly caused by leftover moisture or extended acid exposure. Holes and divots make pans hard to season by making their surfaces uneven.
