Try A Condiment Swap On Your Next Cuban Sandwich For A Flavor Twist
BY AUSTIN HAVENS-BOWEN
If you've ever bitten into a Cubano, it might be hard to fathom a better version but you can swap the yellow mustard for a more flavorful condiment to elevate your sandwich.
Leah Maroney, author of our original recipe for all-out Cuban sandwiches, says, "[...] you can try different kinds of mustard," or "a little mayo and brown mustard."
Many varieties are available on the grocery shelves and mixing it with mayonnaise, like Maroney suggests, can provide a creamy and tangy spread on your Cuban sandwich.
The sandwich already has contrasting flavors from the sweet ham and salty roasted pork, which lends itself to trying different versions of the condiment.
Use a spoonful of spicy brown mustard or Dijon mustard for a spicy kick, or add some honey mustard to give your sandwich a sweet and tangy flavor profile.
If you're not a fan of mustard, skip it entirely and just use mayonnaise. Experiment with different types like chipotle mayo for smokiness or truffle mayo for an elevated taste.
