The Vintage Toast Tool To Avoid Soggy Slices
By ERICA MARTINEZ
Toast can get soggy on a flat surface like a plate because of the steam created by the bread. Back in the day, the British invented a kitchen tool just to solve this problem.
A toast rack is a metal tray with vertical partitions meant to hold pieces of bread after toasting, but before buttering. The rack vents all the steam and keeps the toast crisp.
While a toast rack does ensure crunchy toast, there is a drawback. The toast usually turns cold quickly due to all that extra air circulation, so butter can be hard to spread.
If you just want crisp toast and don't care if it's room-temp, a toast rack still works well. Their elegant appearance also means you can leave them out on the table during brunch.
