The Unusual French Delicacy That Napoleon Ate For His Last Meal
BY COURTNEY ISEMAN
Napoleon Bonaparte died from stomach cancer in 1821. His last meal was a breakfast of sautéed kidneys, liver and bacon chops, shirred eggs, garlic toast, and roasted tomatoes.
The kidneys were most likely lamb or veal, as they are fairly common French specialties. They were sauteed in sherry to provide a sweet flavor.
Fans of the full English breakfast, with its multiple meat options, eggs, tomatoes, and toast, will also spot similarities between Napoleon’s last meal and their traditional fare.
