The Unusual Combination Ulysses S. Grant Ate For Breakfast
BY STEPHANIE FRIEDMAN
Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th U.S. president, ate a surprising combination of food items for breakfast: a cucumber soaked in vinegar (aka a pickle) along with a cup of coffee.
The coffee and pickle combo makes for a highly acidic breakfast. This was before his White House days, and perhaps a reflection of his humble upbringing as a tanner's son in Ohio.
It seems Grant ditched his pickle and coffee pairing after entering the Oval Office. Instead, his breakfasts became lavish spreads of fried apples, steak, bacon, and cakes.
