The Unexpected Ingredient For Better Buttercream Frosting
By TALIN VARTANIAN
Buttercream frosting is smooth, soft, creamy, and tastes like a dream. This popular baking staple comes in many different varieties, but typically consists of fat, milk or cream, and confectioners’ sugar — still, there’s one more ingredient you can add to take your buttercream to a whole new level.
Marshmallow fluff is made of egg whites, cream of tartar, corn syrup, sugar, and vanilla extract. It's the perfect addition to buttercream frosting because its thick and stable consistency provides structure, meaning your frosting won't glide off of cupcakes or cookies, and it will be easier to pipe in general.
If you’re worried that marshmallow fluff will make your buttercream too sweet, adding a pinch of salt will do the trick, or substitute some of the unsalted butter in your frosting recipe with salted butter. The next time you make buttercream frosting, add a little or a lot of fluff and enjoy the improved texture.
