The Ingredient That Will Change Your Oatmeal Forever
By SHAYE GLISSON
Oatmeal is a fantastic breakfast option because it's packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, protein, and hunger-busting fiber. However, if your everyday oatmeal is beginning to feel a bit bland and you're looking to spice things up, the typical almonds, raisins, and blueberries have nothing on this game-changing ingredient.
Tiger nuts are a sweet root vegetable in the same family as the potato, and they make a great oatmeal topper. The tiny, chickpea-shaped morsels — which aren't actually nuts and are safe for those with allergies — have a fig-like outer texture and a chewy center, which tastes sweet like pecans and earthy like a Brazil nut or fig.
Tiger nuts are not only fantastic oatmeal and salad toppers; they're also a great addition to smoothies and trail mixes. Along with their great taste, this ingredient has prebiotic qualities that “help to build a healthy, balanced and diverse microbiome in the gut," says registered dietician Tracy Lockwood Beckerman.
