The Type Of Matcha Starbucks Uses May Not Be What You Expect
BY STEPHANIE FRIEDMAN
Starbucks offers many matcha drinks, and their "matcha powder scoops" feature sugar as the first ingredient and ground Japanese green tea as the second.
Starbucks says they source "shade-grown milled green tea" for its matcha from Korea, Japan, and China. Allegedly, the U.S. blend contains more sugar than tea.
Technically, this mixture isn't straight matcha since the powder traditionally consists of finely ground green tea leaves, so it's not the highest quality version you can get.
