The Tuscan Wines You Should Be Sipping, According To An Oenologist
BY LUCIA CAPRETTI
According to Leonardo Bellaccini, oenologist at the historic San Felice Wine Estate winery in Tuscany, two underrated wines to try are "foglia tonda" and "pugnitello" varieties.
Foglia tonda grapes produce medium-bodied red wines with floral aromas, slight spice, and smooth tannins. If you can find it stateside, try Sequerciani.
Pugnitello grapes create bolder reds with structured tannins and acidity. They have sweet notes of preserved red and dark fruits and contrasting hints of leather, spice, and earth.
While foglia tonda is a refreshing wine to be sipped with a charcuterie board or pasta dish, pugnitello calls for a heartier pairing, such as roasted meat or stuffed mushrooms.
