The Transcendent Tuna Cranberry Sandwich New Yorkers Love
By CLARICE KELLY
A chicken salad sandwich is great on its own, but fruits like cranberries and apples can really elevate the dish, adding an incredibly satisfying layer of complexity that other chicken salad recipes lack. However, this popular New York City combo goes one step further by adding fruit to tuna salad.
NYC’s Court Street Grocers serves a Tunaberry sandwich, which has tuna salad alongside cranberry sauce, horseradish mayo, white onion, and arugula. This sandwich's bold and unique combination of flavors can be traced back to Providence, Rhode Island, where it was created by Dewey Dufresne at his sandwich shop, Joe's.
The future owners of Court Street Grocers, Eric Finkelstein and Matt Ross, first tried this sweet and savory combination at the restaurant that was formerly Joe’s, but it was under new ownership. Court Street's rendition of the original most likely has a few more ingredients mixed in, but is still reminiscent of the classic Joe’s sandwich.
