The Step You Can't Skip For Powdery Puppy Chow Coating
By JOE DILLARD
Puppy Chow, AKA “muddy buddies,” is a classic Midwestern American snack of Chex cereal coated in melted butter, peanut butter, chocolate, and powdered sugar. While Puppy Chow is relatively easy to make, it requires careful attention and patience, and the key step to achieving the perfect coating is all in the timing.
Adding powdered sugar is the last step of making puppy chow, but don't add it right after coating the Chex in melted chocolate and peanut butter. If the mixture is warm when the powdered sugar is added, it will dissolve and leave you with a clumpy mess, so place your chow in the fridge for 10 to 15 minutes first.
The chow should have a "tacky" texture before you toss the cereal with powdered sugar in order to create the perfect snowy-white coating. Even if you forget this chilling tip (or just choose to ignore it), your clumpy puppy chow will still be perfectly edible, despite not looking as appetizing.
