The Secret Ingredient Your Favorite Buttery Cookies Should Have
BY TOM MAXWELL
Butter cookies are easy to make, only requiring butter, sugar, flour, water, and a pinch of salt, but adding grated nutmeg can give them an irreplaceable elegant boost.
Nutmeg’s citrusy-sweet scent and warm flavor goes great with the butter's creamy sweetness, and will add a slightly nutty and earthy element to any butter-heavy cookie.
For the best balance of flavors, add about ¼ of a teaspoon of great nutmeg per two dozen cookies, though you can experiment with other quantities depending on your preference.
Nutmeg can also be used in just about everything from cake and muffins to roast vegetables and charcuterie, so there’s no need to stick to just cookies.
