The Secret Ingredient That Will Change Your Bread Pudding Forever
By LAUREN ROTHMAN
When it comes to repurposing leftovers into a new dish, nothing beats bread pudding, because it’s an easy way to convert leftover or stale bread into a comforting dessert. Virtually any type of bread can be used to make this incredibly versatile dish, but one ingredient can really take it to the next level.
Various flavorings can be used in the custard, from vanilla and almond to nutmeg, and lots of tasty ingredients can be folded in, like chocolate, peaches, and raisins. However, leftover dinner rolls are really the key to a dessert that's soft in the middle with crisp edges that create a delectable textural contrast.
One great recipe uses dinner rolls soaked in a rich custard made from whole eggs, half-and-half, milk, butter, sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon and nutmeg, and salt, and it's all drizzled with a buttery brown sugar caramel once cooked. If that all sounds good to you, be sure to pick up an extra package or two the next time you buy dinner rolls.
