The Secret Ingredient In Elvis’ Favorite Meatloaf
By MELISSA NICHOLSON
Elvis Presley had rather famous culinary preferences, including his adoration for fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches, but meatloaf was actually Elvis’s favorite meal. It was probably his southern roots that made him loyal to this dish, but Elvis’s favorite meatloaf recipe also had a secret ingredient that made it extra tasty.
Most meatloaf is made from ingredients like ground meat, eggs, tomato sauce, onion, crackers or bread, and salt and pepper. However, according to a recipe found in the “Presley Family Cookbook,” Elvis’s favorite meatloaf included wheat germ, which could replace some of the meat in the meatloaf when money was tight.
Wheat germ in the meatloaf must have also been delicious, because Elvis still preferred this "filler" ingredient, even when he could afford all the ground beef he wanted. Full of dietary fiber, wheat germ has a light, nutty flavor that can really enhance a classic meatloaf, so consider trying it in honor of the King of Rock and Roll.
