The Seasoning Blend That’s Hard To Find Outside The US
By MATTHEW SPINA
American cuisine is a melting pot of cooking styles from all over the world, borrowing from other countries while also spreading its own influence outside of the States. Knowing this, you may think that there are no foods that can only be found in the U.S., but there's a certain iconic spice blend that is definitely hard to find outside of America.
The state of Louisiana may have the most complex food culture in the U.S., and its famous Cajun cuisine has roots in French and South American cooking. It’s this very American clash of cultures that produced Cajun seasoning, a blend of white and black pepper, paprika, and cayenne that is hard to find and buy in other countries.
If food lovers outside the U.S. do somehow hear about regional Louisiana cooking and want to try Cajun seasoning themselves, they can make it at home. Essential base ingredients are black pepper, paprika, and cayenne, while popular but optional additions include onion and garlic powder, oregano, white pepper, and red pepper flakes.
